ten years later.

I was a freshman in college, and we had all just moved into the dorms a few weeks earlier. It was early in the morning (for college students, okay) and I was in that hazy pre-awake state, not entirely listening in on my roommate's phone call.  I could hear her start to cry, but we didn't know each other very well yet, and I figured it was a personal conversation, so I tried to go back to sleep.  Then she said, "...and they're bombing the Pentagon?!?"I sat straight up in bed.  Our eyes met.  She was terrified. As she tried to finish up her conversation so she could fill me in, I could hear the helicopters out our window - five, ten, fifteen - I don't remember how many I saw, but they hovered over the city like flies.  It took me a moment to remember that I was looking out my dorm room window at Cheyenne Mountain, home of Norad.

"A plane crashed into the Twin Towers in New York," Cassie told me.  "They don't think it's an accident.  Something's happening at the Pentagon, too.  I think it's being bombed, or... I don't know.  I don't know what's happening."  We scrambled to find a TV, and found ourselves huddled around the big one in the student lounge.  I went to Colorado College, which is largely made up of kids from the East Coast, and it was absolute chaos - it seemed like everyone's parents worked at the Pentagon, or in New York City, or for some branch of the government, and people were  crying, trying to get through to their parents, grilling each other about what we had heard.  I think the scariest part, then, was the not knowing.  Were we at war?  Were we being invaded?  Were there going to be tanks crashing down the streets in an hour?

Cassie and I could only watch so much news before we got antsy.  Anything could happen now, clearly, and we had to be prepared.  We were so fed up with not being able to DO SOMETHING that we rounded up some random people from the dorm hallways and went to the hospital to donate blood - we figured that there could easily be riots, or mass hysteria, or more plane crashes or something, and maybe blood would be needed in the near future.  A bunch of us piled into my Dodge Neon and we drove to the hospital, barely even introducing ourselves.  When we got there, the waiting room was packed - apparently other people had the same idea, too.  We filled out our paperwork, still glued to the news that was playing from every TV in the hospital.  One by one, we went through the screening and started to donate blood.  When they got to me, I was informed that there was a minimum weight requirement and I was something like a pound or two under.

"You have GOT to be kidding me," I muttered.  The nurse shook her head.  "Dammit,"  I said.  "Just... hold on."

"I have to borrow your Nalgene," I said to someone from the dorms who had ridden with us - I don't even remember who - and I stood by the water fountain and drank Nalegenes full of water and making the nurse re-weigh me until she let me in.  The ride back, and the rest of the day, was a blur of panic and rumors and 24 hour news, but over the next few days and weeks, us hospital kids kept seeing each other around campus.  Little did I know, then, that those people would end up becoming some of my closest friends through college- most recently, my friend Davin, who now lives in Argentina, was in the States and was able to stop by for my studio re-opening a few months ago.

9/11 means something different to all of us.  For me, it's a reminder that life as we know it can change in a split second.  It's also a reminder that the response that I saw to this tragedy (ideology, politics, and religion aside), the individual person-to-person response,  was overwhelmingly positive.  Strangers wanted to take care of each other; people who had never met opened up to each other; and I met some of my best friends because of those positive responses.  I hope 9/11 will serve as a reminder to let our humanity continue to shine through in the face of tragedy.

What's your 9/11 story?

(Me and Cassie, my roommate for two years)

my new neighborhood (prospect new town photographer)

Meet my new neighborhood, Prospect New Town.  It's colorful and lush and amazing - it's been so humid, and there are so many plants, that it's really felt tropical in the last few weeks. It's definitely still feeling a little surreal, but I'm not sure if this place will ever feel totally real.   I'm in love with all of this architecture, so much - not just how cool and colorful and modern it is, but how diverse it is.  Each house is completely different.  Some feel almost Southern, with white columns and huge front porches, some are ultra modern, some feel like Georgetown row houses, some feel like a Dr. Seuss book come to life, and many totally defy classification.  Claire & Amber - this post is especially for you :)

The amazing sushi place just diagonally across the park from us:

alien road trip (new mexico lifestyle photographer)

We had this trip planned for months.  I don't even remember how we got started talking about it, but as soon as my friend Brynn and I decided to drive down to the annual UFO conference in Roswell, NM, we got hooked on exchanging UFO jokes and sending each other strange YouTube hoax videos... neither of us feels strongly about aliens one way or the other, but after looking at photos from previous conferences, the potential of lots of people in costume got us really excited. We kind of have a thing for costumes.Oh yeah... did I mention that this happened to land on the exact same weekend we ended up having to move?  And that somehow, despite having grown up in New Mexico, I got Roswell confused with Los Alamos and thought it was only a four hour drive?  Yeah.  Zach insisted that we still go, so we got everything all packed beforehand and Brynn and I made the TEN HOUR drive to Roswell to go participate in such activities as "alien wine tasting and BBQ!!!"

Roswell...it's (really really) hot, completely centered around UFO culture, and an hour away from Mexico.  Even serious businesses, like banks and doctor's offices, had UFOs or motherships or cute aliens in their logos.  They closed down Main Street for the festival, and we walked around in the heat checking out local alien-related businesses and getting stared at because, as it turns out, we were some of the only people in costume.  Yep.

On the border of CO and NM:

The "be in touch" mural  became one of our favorites.  We made the security guards take our picture, which is why it's horribly out of focus.

I got so attached to this blue wig.  Every time I put on costume hair, I get disappointed that it's not my real hair.  Also, please notice the news crew in the reflection.

The alien costume contest!  We definitely watched this woman dressed as Blue Cleopatra eat a handful of live crickets onstage.  I'm not sure what this has to do with aliens, but it was entertaining.  I really wanted to find these people after the show and take some photos, but most of them changed out of costume right away :(

Cedar House is moving!

So, you know how every so often, life is just floating along and then something happens suddenly and it just rocks your world in every way?  That's pretty much exactly what we're going through right now.  My husband Zach was offered a great job in Boulder, and so we'll be moving!  It all feels very sudden, and although we'll be leaving our bestest bestest friends and the greatest community I've ever been a part of, we are SO excited for what lies ahead.  It's weird - I was realizing that, in my adult life, I've never made a move that was difficult.  We've moved a ton, but each time we moved we were totally and completely done with the old place and never looked back.  This one will be so different... I've spent the last few days crying every few hours, followed by a few hours of being super stoked, then getting all nostalgic  and sad again.  BV is truly the best place I've ever lived, although, at times, it has also been one of the hardest.  Both Zach and I know we're ready for this next step but at the same time it's so hard to leave the people you love (even if it's just a few hours away, haha).I've found a great little studio office space in the unbelievably cool community of Prospect New Town, about 10 minutes from Boulder.  You guys - you will NOT believe how awesome this neighborhood is!  It was named "America's Coolest Neighborhood" by Dwell magazine and "The Best New Town in the West" by Sunset magazine... but even more importantly than that, the first time we drove through, we both fell in love immediately.  Prospect is founded on the same New Urbanism principles of walkability, sustainability, and community as the South Main neighborhood in Buena Vista, which are all concepts we love.  We'll be in a sweet mixed-use condo / townhouse right on the main square and park, with my studio on the ground level in a commercial space and our home on the floors above, and I definitely plan to have an open house for you all to come visit once we're settled.  I'm excited because there is so much great architecture in this neighborhood that there will be endless locations to shoot in, and each one will feel so different -  brightly-colored walls, concrete, parks with hammocks, a swimming pool, multi-colored rowhouses, Tuscan style architecture... it'll be amazing!  Living in "America's Coolest Neighborhood" is going to make me feel super cool, and shooting a session in "America's Coolest Neighborhood" should make you feel super cool too :)

Aside from my "home base", not much else about my business will change.  I'll be keeping the same business name, the same rates for 2011, and (as always) I would LOVE to travel to your destination!

To my past / current / future clients:

- I love you guys.  Like a ton.  That just needs to be said first. - If you've already booked a wedding or session, nothing at all will change for you.  I won't be charging any additional travel fees and I still am looking forward to working with you all. - If you haven't booked yet, but were considering it, please do.  I will be traveling to the BV area all the time this summer and I won't be charging any travel fees, so please keep scheduling and sending BV / Salida referrals my way!   I'll still be visiting friends and shooting weddings, senior portraits, families and children in BV and Salida frequently, so I'll be in town anyway. I've been so excited for senior season and I can't wait to work with all of you lovelies from Salida High School, BV High School, and Lake County High School. - I would still love to help you with any local vendor recommendations, or suggest Arkansas Valley venues for you to check out. - My rates for 2011 will stay the same. - You can still place reprint / album orders at any time. - If you have outstanding orders waiting to be picked up or paid for, now would be a good time to do so, otherwise a minor shipping charge may apply. - If you've been hoping for a session closer to the Front Range, I now have an amazing place to shoot in. Prospect is full of bright crayon colors, lush greenery, parks, sweet architecture, and great textures (see below).  It's going to be an artistic dream to shoot in :) - As always, I love to travel, so don't hesitate to ask!

So let's pretend this is a party, and you're all invited.  Here it is:

WHEN: We should be fully settled in & good to go by the second week of July.

WHERE: Our new address will be 722B Tenacity Drive; Longmont, CO; 80504

Prospect is just a few minutes in between Boulder and Longmont.  As always, I'd love for you to stop by anytime!  Driving directions to the new studio office from Denver:  Take I-25 north, and then get off at exit 217 for Hwy 36 towards Boulder.  Exit at CO-121 for Hwy 287 towards Lafayette.  Turn left on Tenacity Drive into the Prospect neighborhood, and the studio will be on the right, just past the coffee shop and wine store (yesss!).

From Boulder:  Take Diagonal Hwy / 119 towards Longmont.  Take a hard right on S. Hover, then a left on Plateau, which turns into N 105th.  Turn right on Plateau (again).  Turn left onto 100 Year Party Court into the Prospect neighborhood, then turn right on Tenacity, and I'll be on the left. (Honestly I was kind of bummed to not end up with an address on 100 Year Party Court.)

My business name, phone number, and all internet stuff will stay exactly the same, and hopefully in the next month or so I'll have a sign so you know where to find me.

This next month is going to be crazy for me - excited, fun crazy, but still totally crazy.  Thanks in advance for your patience, and thank you all SO much for your continued support.  You, my clients, are the reason that I get to live this life that I love, and I never want to take that for granted.  I'm looking forward to seeing more of you in Denver & Boulder, and I would deeply appreciate your referrals as I get started in a wonderful new place!  Come visit me any time!

santa fe

A few images from a quick trip we took back "home" to Santa Fe a few weeks ago.  This is what comes to mind when I think of my childhood - intensely blue skies, rounded soft adobe corners, glorious sunsets...

I love living in the mountains, but I still miss the desert hardcore - especially during sunsets like this one.  I plan on heading back to Santa Fe a few times this summer, so please, please get in touch if you're in the area and want to schedule a session!
